Sterilization is a top priority here at Tanner and Reichhold Orthodontics. We strive to keep our office, equipment and everything in between sterile and safe for our patients. We feel that having a basic knowledge of sterilization and what it entails is important for our patients overall treatment satisfaction.
What is sterilization you ask? Sterilization is the method of ensuring an object or surface is entirely free of microbial life. Low-level microbial contamination is not a problem, but for certain instruments like our orthodontic tools, this extreme level of cleanliness is necessary for patient safety!
The process of sterilization has been around for thousands of years. Back in Egyptian times, the use of antiseptics such as pitch or tar was used in embalming bodies. In 1881, Robert Koch and his associates devised the first non-pressure flowing steam sterilizer. Then, in 1994, an American Physician by the of William Rutala worked with the Center for Disease Control to characterize an Ideal Sterilization Method, which has changed how the modern process of sterilization works.
There are multiple different types of sterilization processes that can occur. There is high temperature and high-pressure sterilization, chemical sterilization, ultraviolet light and gas chemical sterilization. We prefer to use a state-of-the-art autoclave or a Lisa fully automatic class B water steam sterilizer, which produces extremely hot steam under high pressure. Please be assured that we take every precaution necessary to ensure your safety throughout your orthodontic treatment!
